Recently I've heard a lot about personal creeds. In one of my classes we were invited by assignment to concoct our own. I like mine. And I hope it sounds familiar to many of you.
I Hope for a Better
World
I will always place
God first in my life and live according to His plan. I will live according
to His logic and not the world’s.
I will love everyone.
I may not like everyone but I will love
them—always respecting, never belittling or gossiping. I will always give the
benefit of the doubt.
I will always be
honest in my dealings with others. I will never lie or cheat or steal. When
I am wrong I will admit it quickly and emphatically. When I have wronged a
person or shown disrespect in anyway I will confess my error and ask for their
forgiveness
I will live magical.
I will Go Big or Go Home. I will not
seek a thrill for the sake of it but rather never let fear or awkwardness get
in the way of living an exciting life. Adventure is out there. I will capture
it.
I will prioritize
and recognize time as my most valuable commodity. I will spend that time
serving God, loving my family, and creating and maintaining worthwhile friendships.
I will relentlessly
pursue my dreams. I will become an expert in Mandarin Chinese. I will
become an expert in performing Xiangsheng,
the Chinese art of comedic dialogue. Though this will bring me an immense
sense of fulfillment, I will do it for the primary purpose of building cultural
bridges and making the world a happier place. I will never stop dreaming.
I will also recognize the necessity to defer dreams when it
means helping others pursue theirs. I will recognize and honor the people that have done and will do this for me.
I will laugh. I will
smile. I will strive to make people do the same.
I will believe in
myself and believe I am fully capable of achieving anything I set my mind
to. I will strive to drown out any feelings to the contrary and foster instead feelings
of confidence in my abilities.
I will be excellent in
every environment I find myself in. I will strive to learn from every setback
and disappointment and avoid the temptation of feeling regret for wasted or
lost time. I will turn every stumbling block into a stepping-stone.
I will be successful.
The following scripture comes from a book I hold sacred: The
Book of Mormon. It comes from the book of Ether, chapter twelve, verse four. I
read the scripture in a recent time of struggle and it brought a feeling of
supreme confidence.
Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better
world, yea even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith,
maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast,
always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God.
I hope for a better world.

A guiding statement of purpose that is both positive and personally challenging is commendable indeed. The enemies of righteousness in this fallen world will try mightily to put you down and take you out. But acting, rather than being acting upon, will make you strong and put you in good company with other children of God who are trying to make a better world. I offer you my support in this most worthy endeavor.
